TFF Expected to Drive Economic Boost, Film Contest and Family Fun for April 2010

TALLAHASSEE, FL – After playing hundreds of films to thousands of visitors in its first two years, the Tallahassee Film Festival (TFF) will return April 8-11, 2010, to Florida’s Capital City. This year’s festival is themed See You in the Dark and will feature pre-selected films, workshops and lectures for film enthusiasts throughout the weekend.

TALLAHASSEE—Members of the Tallahassee Film Festival, presented by Florida Commerce Credit Union, invite all amateur and professional filmmakers to compete in the 48 Hour Film Contest powered by Tallahassee.com.  The contest provides the community with the chance to be a part of the film process from conception to viewing by offering contestants the opportunity to create and submit their own short film.

“One of the goals of the Tallahassee Film Festival is to give local cinematographers a venue to display their work to the general public,” said Bob Howard, president of the Tallahassee Film Festival.  “The 48 Hour Film Contest is a perfect vehicle in which to accomplish this goal.”

The contest will take place March 20-22, 2009.  The contest is open to anyone who assembles a team of one to five people to compete.  To enter the 48 Hour Film Contest, stop by the TCC Capitol Center from 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2009. The entry fee is $50 per team. A representative from each team must register in person.

Teams have 48 hours and a limited production budget of $100 to create their own short film for submission.  On Friday evening, teams will receive a theme, prop, and a line of dialogue which must be included in their film. On Sunday evening, all teams must turn in their finished work.

All films will be featured on the Tallahassee Democrat website: www.tallahassee.com/48hourcontest.  The public will be able to view and vote for films to win the coveted Tallahassee.com Viewer’s Choice Award.

Tallahassee Film Festival gets ready to roll ‘em

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Tallahassee Democrat
January 2, 2009

By Mark Hinson

Last May, the inaugural Tallahassee Film Festival gave more than 2,600 movie buffs sneak peeks at such films as Werner Herzog’s “Encounters at the End of the World,” Helen Hunt’s directorial debut “Then She Found Me” and Tallahassee native Aloura Charles’ fine first feature “Reservations.”

Expect more advance screenings — and more international cinema — when the Tallahassee Film Festival returns in April. This year’s celluloid overload is being expanded from three days to five. It will run from April 15-19 in venues all around the city, and many of the screenings are free.

“We moved it to April because that’s when the biggest student population is in town,” festival president Robert Howard said. “And we are all about education. It’s also when the legislators will be here, too. Maybe we can attract them to the festival.”

Budding Steven Spielbergs also will be happy to learn that the film festival is expanding its popular 24-Hour Film Contest to a 48-Hour Film Contest.

During last year’s competition, more than 15 teams of amateur and professional filmmakers signed on to write, act, shoot and edit a five-minute movie in a 24-hour period. They were all given a common theme and a whopping $100 budget. The mini-movies turned out to be a popular draw when they were posted online for voting and viewing at Tallahassee.com.

Monday, January 5th, 2009

January 2, 2009
By Mark Hinson

Docs rocked in 2008.

When it came time to draw up a list of the year’s best films, several fine documentaries kept popping up again and again. Most of these non-fiction flicks were shown at All Saints Cinema, the Miracle 5 or as part of the inaugural Tallahassee Film Festival in May.

So, instead making them compete with “Wall*E” in the overall best-of list, I decided to give special commendations to:
